En-route to Ganavan Beach, the trip to the medieval castle is well worth while. If you are particularity interested in Scottish history, then there is a lot to learn about with the Scottish clan system when visiting Dunollie Castle. Even if you're not interested in the history scene - Dunollie Castle is worth a visit for the views alone of the Hebridiean Isles that it hosts.

Dunollie Castle was built in the 12th century by 3rd chief of the clan MacDougall's, Ewan MacDougall. Today, the remains of the castle are the seat and ancestral home of the Clan MacDougall where for more than 1000 years, the Clan Chiefs and Lords of Lorn ruled large areas of Argyll from the Oban area called Dunollie.

The castle is open today to the public as part of the Dunollie Museum, Castle and Grounds, where visitors of Oban can also go to become educated on the fascinating history of the MacDougall family and servant's quarters.

The Dunollie area is a 2 minute drive from the center of Oban, heading North following the signs to Ganavan. If you are exploring by foot, a pleasant 30 minute stroll along Oban's seafront from the town center, joining the Woodland Trail across from the War Memorial will bring you to the entrance of Dunollie Museum, Castle and Grounds.
